  • Continental debuts the Cross Contact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology in the ultimate endurance challenge on the Pan-American Highway
  • Famed off-road racer, Rainer Zietlow, and Challenge4 Team embark on the ultimate two-week challenge

Ushuaia, Argentina - (June 30, 2011) - The much anticipated TDI-Panamericana tour will begin this Friday, Rainer Zietlow and his team are ready to embark on the ultimate journey - a two-week voyage from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Deadhorse, Alaska.  Equipped with Continental Tire's most innovative LT/SUV tire to date, the dynamic CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology, the team will travel close to 16,000 miles in 14 days.

Zietlow, a celebrated off-road racer, and his Challenge4 teammates Carlos Fernandez and Marius Biela will take off June 30 on the Pan-American Highway's most southern tip - Ushuaia, Argentina.  From there, the group will travel the length of the highway - the longest road in the world - weaving through 14 countries and completing their journey in Deadhorse, Alaska on July 13.

The team's 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI® Clean Diesel SUV, equipped with Continental's CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology tires, will drive non-stop for the full two weeks.  With the drivers rotating through five-hour shifts, the TDI-Panamericana tour will test both the drivers' endurance and the endurance of their equipment.

The CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology is a premium all-season tire, developed to deliver improved fuel economy and treadwear, reduce harmful CO2 emissions and surpass the competition - which it does, stopping 34 feet shorter than the leading competitor in independent wet braking tests.

The hallmark of the CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology isdelivering greater fuel economy compared to the leading competition. With the advance EcoPlus Technology, the CrossContact LX20 can save the average driver up to 2,500 miles of fuel - a crucial feature for the Challenge4 Team as they make their way across two continents.  Offering a smooth and comfortable ride, crisp handling and drastically reduced road noise, the CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology is leading the way in road comfort, quality and savings.

"The CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology is the perfect fit for the Panamericana Challenge," said Bill Caldwell, VP of Sales and Marketing, Continental Tire.  "With the LX20's improved fuel economy, in concert with the tire's durability, phenomenal wet braking abilities and all-season features, it was an obvious choice for the Challenge4 Team.  At Continental, we're fully committed to our environment and we can't wait to see our green tire in action."

EcoPlus Technology consists of two main components, Tg-F polymers and +Silane. The Tg-F polymers are temperature-activated functional polymers that increase compound bonding, improving the wear and fuel efficiency of the tire. The second component of the EcoPlus Technology, +Silane, is an additive that works to enhance the tire's grip on slippery roads and reduce stopping distances.  These technologies work together to enhance the driving experience for a long tire life when conditions are normal, and to provide excellent wet braking on slippery roads.
