The winter break is finally over. From 27 to 28 April the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup is starting into its third season at Hockenheim. 21 registered male and female drivers are competing against three former Formula 1 racers at the first round of the world’s most eco-conscious one-make cup. Marc Surer, Mika Salo and Eric van de Poele are contesting the event on the first DTM weekend of the year at the Hockenheim Motodrom in the Legends classification.

News brief on the season opener

The opening round of the Scirocco R-Cup's third season is again seeing several legends on the grid of the most eco-friendly one-make cup. In the competition of former Formula 1 stars, Marc Surer (60), Mika Salo (45) and Eric van de Poele (50) are meeting in the near-285 HP sport coupés. All three have stayed in touch with the Grand Prix scene. Surer is co-commentator for Sky and Salo for the Finnish MTV3 channel, van de Poele worked as an expert for Belgian TV. Surer knows the DTM from his days as BMW sport boss in 1991 and 1992 and van de Poele won the DTM title with the Bavarian-based brand in 1987 before subsequently moving up into Grand Prix racing. The three legends will no doubt not only be watching the DTM's start into a new era out of the corner of their eyes

In addition to the legends, who keep changing, 21 permanent entrants are competing in the Scirocco R-Cup. 13 young drivers are classified in the Junior Cup. They include nine rookies who are starting to tackle their first season in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup at Hockenheim. In the Pro Cup, eight more seasoned touring car campaigners are on the grid

As in 2011, two ladies are in the cockpits of the Scirocco R-Cupcar. The Swede Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky (19) was one of the finalists of the joint Volkswagen and FIA "Women in Motor Sport” initiative. Michelle Gatting (18) comes from the Danish Formula Ford Championship

International field: The grid at Hockenheim is filled with drivers from eleven nations including India, Mexico, USA, Poland and Denmark plus Switzerland and Turkey, among others

In 2012, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup is starting into its third season. With four exploits in 2011, the current champion Mateusz Lisowski is the driver who has clinched the largest number of victories to date. He also ranks at the top of the list of pole setters after having set three best times in qualifying

In 2011, the subsequent champion Mateusz Lisowski won the season opener at the Hockenheimring. The runner-up was Daniel Lloyd, who had gone into the race from pole. The fastest race lap was posted by Legends entrant and former DTM Champion Nicola Larini at 1m 59.908s

The captivating races of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup are not only enjoying increasing popularity at the venues but also among TV viewers. Compared with the series' inaugural year of 2010 the number of TV contacts in Germany quadrupled in 2011 to 13.9 million. Race reports can be watched for free on Sport1 and n-tv plus on the pay channel Paykanal Sport1+. The one-make cup thrills people in social networks as well. The Volkswagen Motorsport Facebook page already has more than 30,000 fans

All races of the 2012 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup can also be watched on the internet by live streaming; optionally with English or German commentaries. Coverage of the racing action can be accessed at

ProTalent Jan-Frank Kasten is one of the young drivers to make his Scirocco R-Cup debut at the Grand Prix circuit in Hockenheim. The 19-year-old prevailed in the competition sponsored by Volkswagen Coaching and Volkswagen Motorsport among 600 Volkswagen apprentices and now has the opportunity to contest a Scirocco R-Cup season as a driver. The two Pro mechanics Philip Riedel and Axel Baumann were given the chance to work in the 2012 Scirocco R-Cup

For 2012, the engine of the Cup-Scirocco was modified once more. It now delivers 173 kW (235 HP) in normal mode and 210 kW (285 HP) with activated push-to-pass system ten HP more, respectively, than before

The rules for using the push-to-pass system that gives the drivers a power boost of 37 kW (50 HP) for a limited period of time were modified for 2012. As before, use of the system is limited, albeit it is no longer the same for all drivers but depends on the grid position. At Hockenheim, the drivers on the top front rows of the grid have ten trials while the drivers on rows four to six have eleven. An additional trial is added for all three subsequent rows. This guarantees even more thrilling races

Comments on the season opener

Start of Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup 2012

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director: "The Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup is already starting into its third season at Hockenheim. We again have a strong field for this year and I'm sure that the spectators will be seeing thrilling races as before. Our three renowned entrants in the Legends classification guarantee this as well. The former Formula 1 racers Marc Surer, Mika Salo and Eric van de Poele will no doubt be spicing up the action at Hockenheim.”

Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky (S), Junior Cup driver: "The Scirocco R-Cup has a solid reputation as a school for young drivers throughout Europe. It is designed to give every entrant the opportunity to continue to develop, both in terms of driving but also with respect to all the things that count off the track. This includes data analyses or video trainings, for example. I'm extremely excited about my first race coming up in the Scirocco and am sure that I'll have a lot of butterflies in my stomach at the start.”

Ola Nilsson (S), Pro Cup driver:"The thing I particularly like about the Scirocco R-Cup is that the series is organised in a very professional manner and that the drivers can always rely on having perfectly prepared cars for each race. I'm particularly looking forward to the season opener at Hockenheim because this is my favourite track on the calendar. I'm hoping to lay the foundation for a solid season there because after finishing 2011 as the runner-up I want to improve by one position by the end of 2012. That probably won't be easy, though, as the competition in the field is extremely fierce."

Moritz Oestreich (D), Pro Cup driver:"In 2012, we'll no doubt be in for a very exciting season at which I'm hoping to be in contention for the championship. The Scirocco R-Cup offers young drivers the opportunity to prove their skills against true motorsport legends. The first race will likely be turbulent already, as the Hockenheimring is a track where you can expect many overtaking maneuvers.”

Jann-Hendrik Ubben (D), Pro Cup driver: "The Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup is not only the world's most eco-friendly one-make cup but also delivers a great show at each race! It's really huge fun to drive the car. Unfortunately, I've never been on podium at the Hockenheimring in my career so far. Hopefully, that'll change at the 2012 season opener even though the competition will again be very fierce this year.”
