ATS Formula 3 Cup Blomqvist and Auer triumph in Spielberg
Tom Blomqvist and Lucas Auer produced absolute top performances in the ATS Formula 3 Cup around the 4.326 kilometer track in Spielberg. Starting from pole position for Saturday’s wet opening race, Blomqvist celebrated his debut win ahead of Mitchell Gilbert and Alon Day. Pole setter Blomqvist also claimed maximum points in the third race with the new Volkswagen Power Engine including push-to-pass system. In the second race the Briton was unlucky and was only ninth due to a time penalty. Instead the Austrian and local matador Auer celebrated first place as well as Gilbert and Yannick Mettler for finishing second and third respectively. In the overall standings Jimmy Eriksson, whose best result during the weekend was a third place, remains the dominant driver with 281 points followed by Kimiya Sato (203 points) and Lucas Auer (182 points).
Scandinavian Touring Car Championship Kristoffersson defends championship lead at Östersund
Johan Kristoffersson remains overall leader in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC). At Östersund in Sweden the Volkswagen Team Biogas driver at the wheel of the Volkswagen Scirocco CNG took second place in the opening race before collecting further valuable points in the second race after finishing sixth. His team mate Jordi Gené also produced a strong performance and clinched a fourth and second place finish. Johan Stureson, another Volkswagen driver, finished the second race on the podium in third place. After the fifth of eight races this season Kristoffersson now leads with a total of 172 points.
ADAC Formula Masters Debut victory for Nissany, Malja new championship leader
Roy Nissany won his first ADAC Formula Master race at Spielberg. Race two went to Alessio Picariello who, like all the other drivers, races a 145 hp Dallara ‘powered by Volkswagen’. In the third race Lotus driver Marvin Kirchhöfer celebrated his fourth victory of the season. However, the budding talent from Leipzig lost his championship lead to Gustav Malja who now sits atop the standings by two points from Kirchhöfer after clinching a brace of seconds and a fourth place finish in Styria.
Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Rally legends fire up the Nürburgring
The Scirocco R-Cup is also already in rally fever a week before the ADAC Rally Deutschland starts. Three former rally stars Markku Alén, Juha Kankkunen and Carlos have announced their participation in the race at the Nürburgring on 18 August. Sébastien Ogier, who will compete for Volkswagen in the World Rally Championship in 2013 in a Polo R WRC, will also test his skills against the 21 regular drivers in the Cup-Scirocco with up to 285 hp (210 kW) powered by Bio Natural Gas.
