FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Ogier and Mikkelsen gather valuable experience in Spain

After scoring eleven consecutive class victories there were several problems to end the season of preparation: on the Spanish round of the World Rally Championship, factory driver Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia (F/F) were forced to retire their Škoda S2000 at the end of the opening day with a drivetrain defect. Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Ola Fløene (N/N), the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) champions, finished the 1,391.73 kilometres in 21st position after restarting under Rally 2 regulations following an earlier incident. After an entertaining start in front of the famous cathedral in Barcelona the drivers were faced with difficult conditions in the surrounding countryside due to the extremely slippery stages. Following the learning year in the less powerful S2000 car, the team eagerly awaits the debut of the Polo R WRC in the Monte Carlo Rally on 15 January 2013. On the Volkswagen team’s agenda before the start of the ‘Monte’ are tests in Mexico, France and Sweden.

Stefano Montesi was crowned champion in the last race of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup China season finale. After fourth place in race one, the Italian clinched the title with second place in the subsequent race around the Shanghai International Circuit. Montesi’s fellow countryman Andrea Reggiani won both races. In the first race he celebrated a start-to-finish victory and was followed home by Yuan Bo and William Lok. In race two, Ida Masahiko completed the podium behind Reggiani and the new champion. Montesi’s closest rival in the championship, Yuan Bo, initially kept the title race wide open after taking second place in the first race. In the second race, the 25-year old was unable to increase the pressure, was only seventh and dropped behind Masahiko Ida in the overall standings to finish third.
