The Audi A6 has established itself as a benchmark of luxury and performance, with a full history of Audi innovation driving each new iteration. In 2010, the tradition of progressive innovation continues, with a new 3.2 FSI V6 engine offering more power and increased efficiency, new Sport Packages, and Audi’s cutting-edge third-generation MMI; all bolster an already solid portfolio of equipment to provide the benchmark in refinement, performance and innovation for luxury sedans.
The Design: A Well-Tailored Suit
The A6 builds on some of the most successful elements of Audi design, with a large, single-frame grille dominating the otherwise understated nose of the A6. Brilliant high-intensity headlights with LED daytime running lights add a powerful road presence, and two large air inlets toward the bottom of the front fascia give the impression of speed and athleticism.
Along its sides, the A6 presents an image of class with reserved, muscular fender arches and refined accents around the cabin. The relatively long wheelbase of 111.9 inches gives the A6 a stately appeal, and large, dynamic wheel choices offer a splash of style and performance. The long, aerodynamic styling of the A6 sedan helps deliver exceptional fuel economy as well, presenting a class-leading drag coefficient of just .29.
The A6 has a sporty rear design dominated by two large LED taillights, while a relatively short trunk deck gives the sedan an almost coupe-like appearance, and two muscular exhaust ports lend the impression of speed.
The Interior: Built for Success
Like all Audi products, the cabin of the A6 is executed with high-quality craftsmanship and materials. Brown walnut inlays accent the center console, door panels and dash, creating an atmosphere of class and sophistication. Comfortable and supportive seats are clad in Valcona leather in the A6, while the S6 enjoys silk Napa leather wrapping the S6 sport seats. Vehicles equipped with navigation also boast Audi third-generation MMI®, which is more powerful and intuitive than ever before. The large wheelbase affords passengers ample leg and shoulder room, and the arching roofline of the A6 accommodates individuals of any stature.
The Engines: A Perfect Option for Any Driver
The 2010 A6 is available with three engine choices, in addition to the S6 specific offering. An all-new 3.2 FSI V6 produces 265 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to innovations like Audi Valvelift System and direct-injection, the new, all-aluminum powerplant delivers remarkable fuel economy (18 city / 28 hwy / 22 combined) as well as a healthy powerband. The 3.2 FSI is available with Audi’s Multitronic continuously variable transmission, which provides a smooth and responsive driving experience.
In 2009 Audi introduced the supercharged, 3.0-liter aluminum V6 - the 3.0 TFSI. The new engine has been designed to offer the ultimate combination of power and fuel economy. Delivering 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, the 3.0 TFSI takes advantage of the smooth Audi Tiptronic six-speed automatic transmission and delivers class-leading fuel economy (18 city / 26 hwy / 21 combined). The 3.0 TFSI is available in both the A6 Sedan and the A6 Avant.
There are two ways to have an expressively powerful A6. The car also is available with a 4.2 liter FSI V8 engine in addition to the supercharged V6 of the 3.0T. Built entirely of lightweight aluminum, the 4.2 FSI V8 delivers 350 horsepower and 328 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a Tiptronic six-speed automatic transmission, available in the A6 Sedan with quattro all-wheel drive, and differentiated with the sporty S-Line exterior.
The S6 operates on a still-higher plane, boasting uncompromising power from a 5.2 liter FSI V10 engine. The pinnacle of Audi engineering, the 5.2-liter engine uses advanced magnesium alloy for the intake, reducing weight to an astonishing 485 lbs. With 435 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, the engine is the ultimate in performance from Audi.
The Transmissions: Responsive and Efficient
The A6 3.2 FSI makes use of the Audi Multitronic continuously variable transmission, or CVT. The gearbox delivers a constant stream of power, making optimal use of the wide torque band of the 3.2-liter V6 engine. The marriage results in smooth acceleration, ample power and added efficiency. The 3.2 FSI with Multitronic transmission is available in FrontTrak, Audi’s front-wheel drive configuration.
Buyers opting for the 3.0 TFSI engine are rewarded with a Tiptronic six-speed automatic transmission. The perfect compromise between a traditional manual transmission and modern automatics, the Tiptronic allows the driver to select gears manually if the need or desire arises. A simple bump of the shifter, or click of optional steering wheel mounted paddles, delivers near instant, precise shifts with all of the smoothness of a traditional automatic gearbox. The 3.0 TFSI Tiptronic is available on both the A6 Sedan and A6 Avant with quattro all-wheel drive. The 4.2 FSI V8 engine is mated to the same Tiptronic six-speed automatic transmission.
The S6 with utilizes a Tiptronic six-speed automatic transmission with specifically chosen gear ratios that help channel the brute force of the 5.2-liter V10 engine. With responsive shifts and precise gear choices, Tiptronic is the logical choice when it comes to the sport-bred nature of the S6.
The A6 Avant: The Perfect Combination of Performance, Refinement and Utility
The A6 Avant offers a substantial 33.93 cubic feet of luggage area, more than double the capacity of the sedan. A large rear hatch helps make short work of loading and unloading, and the rear seats fold to provide even more versatility. In total, the 2010 A6 Avant 3.0T can be configured to deliver up to 63.83 cubic feet of useable cargo space, while still delivering the performance, refinement and driving experience drivers expect from the A6 sedan.
