The new Caddy Racer has made a strong start to the 2011 Volkswagen Racing Cup with a competitive first outing, coming away with 11th and 14th places in the two races at Snetterton over the weekend, 14-15 May.

A tricky qualifying session saw the number 33 RAC-liveried new Caddy Racer start Race 1 in 15th with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK director, Simon Elliott, at the wheel.  The pairing showed strong potential throughout the race and Elliott battled hard to make up several places, crossing the line 11th place which would be his grid spot for the second race of the weekend.

Keen to build on the positives from Race 1, Elliott made a very strong start to Race 2 and had moved up to eighth position by the first corner.  However, an incident caused by a driver further up the field saw the Caddy Racer’s progress halted and Elliott was unlucky to drop positions after taking avoiding action.  Over the remaining laps, as Elliott became more familiar with the characteristics of the new Caddy Racer, he was able to further exploit its potential and was involved in a number of close battles, posting his quickest laptime of the two races before crossing the line 14th.

Completely new for the 2011 season, the new Caddy Racer is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine developing 270 PS, channeled through the front wheels via a six-speed Volkswagen Racing quick shift gearbox.  In addition to this, the rear axle has been uprated to the multi-link system found in the road-going Golf.

Returning for his second  season in the highly competitive Volkswagen Racing Cup, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK director, Simon Elliott explained: ‘It is great to finally be back out on track with the Volkswagen Racing Cup for what is shaping up to be a more exciting season than ever.  The new Caddy Racer feels strong already and I am really pleased with our debut performance.’

Elliott continued: ‘We were unlucky to finish just outside the top ten this weekend but we have made some strong steps forward with the Caddy Racer’s development and that will be the aim for Brands Hatch. Since it was launched at the end of last year, the new Caddy has won a number of awards, and I am hopeful that the new Caddy Racer can add to this success.’

Rounds 5 and 6 of the Volkswagen Racing Cup takes place at Brands Hatch over the weekend of 18-19 June.
